13 tips to increase your profits

Photographs are an essential part of a lot description in any type of auction. Buyers carefully review both the description and the photographs of the lots before placing a
bid. Therefore, taking quality and stylish photographs will help you receive greater benefits and make buyers appreciate the beauty of your objects. Check out our list of fourteen tips, designed to help you create the perfect visual accompaniment to your objects.

  1. Use correct lighting: daylight helps to enhance the details of the object. Artificial light alters the actual colors of the subject and flash photography can create shadows and, as a consequence, an unattractive result.
  2. Stabilize the camera: if you move the camera, the images will appear out of focus. Use a tripod or some other means to stabilize the camera when taking the picture.
  3. Show only the items you are selling: any other item that appears in the image can distract potential bidders, detract from it, or even cause confusion about what is included in the lot. If you can’t prevent objects from coming out, they should be as neutral as possible.
  4. Use a neutral background: a uniform, neutral background helps make the lot stand out. Consider using a sheet or piece of paper or cardboard for the background.
  5. Take photos from all angles: bidders seek to see as much detail as possible. Therefore, you should always include images of the back, bottom, top, and sides. For paintings, use an image of the painting without the frame as the main image.
  6. Make sure your objects are presentable and clean: to present your batch as well as possible, it is worth cleaning it properly before photographing it.
  7. Use neutral reference points: for objects of unusual or irregular dimensions, include a reference object, such as a tape measure, in the photo to show the scale. Make sure the reference object does not distract or detract from the offered object.
  8. Accurately displays status: signs of wear and tear or (minor) damage should be mentioned in the description and shown very clearly in the pictures. Thus, bidders can know the state of the object and the possibility of restoring or repairing it.
  9. Choose your camera carefully: a digital camera is much better than a mobile phone camera for taking close-up photos.
  10. A good image will increase your visits: the first image of your series of photographs will be used as the main image, visible from the auction page. This is the image used to attract attention, so be sure to show your subject from its best angle.
  11. Don’t forget any details: if your lot includes more than one item, be sure to add at least one image that shows the entire lot. Remember to also include the manuals or certificates.
  12. Avoid self-portraits: pay attention when taking photos of objects with reflective surfaces or with reflective backgrounds.
  13. Don’t adjust the color: digital editing of your photos should be limited to tilting the angle and cropping the edges. Never adjust the color, as it will create a false expectation of the actual color of the object.
